But buying a new one simply legitimizes the fact that a Chinese conglomerate has the ability to sell vehicles in America so long as they properly conceal the corporate origins.

Jaguar's Indian now, anything wrong with that?

Volvos are still designed and built in Sweden by the Swedish. If it weren't for the Chinese, Volvo would've gone bankrupt because Ford gave them nothing to work with and their cars weren't as great as they could've been.

I'm old enough to remember people talking that way about computers, and before that hi-fis. (A "hi-fi" is a electro-mechanical device for extracting sound from vinyl discs and FM broadcasts.)

I bet if you post this picture on any Jalopnik/oppo post, you'll get a few likes. I know I liked it.

That's what I was wondering. A Chinese entity somehow wouldn't be able to sell cars here without hiding that the company is Chinese [owned]?

That's ridiculous. Whether the American public would buy a Chinese car might actually be a legitimate question but beside that there is nothing preventing them from trying.

If you aren't buying things made in China, you aren't buying much of anything.

You're not really taking a stand on anything, here. Sure, it sounds like you are, but you really aren't.

Cell phones, computers, tvs, crappy toys you get in a happy meal... But it was a car assembled in Sweden that pushed you over the edge?

I like Mini as much as the next Jalop but buying a new one simply legitimizes the fact that a German conglomerate has the ability to sell vehicles in America so long as they properly conceal the corporate origin. What's your point?

Here's the thing though, I grew up in the DC area and am one of those DC natives who still refuses to use the name Reagan National Airport.

They changed it from Washington National Airport back in 1998 but basically at the time everyone in DC was like "Reagan's an asshole, they just named some federal building after him and now he gets an airport?" and we all decided we weren't going to call it Reagan.

Anyone from out of town who says they're flying in/out of Reagan airport is promptly corrected.

Your point being? As long as they pass safety inspection why does it matter where they came from? We should be allowed to buy cars from Germany, South Korea, Japan, Italy, etc etc etc but not China? Currently a huge number of parts are already made in China, like the Getrag manual transmissions in the Mustang.

My first Volvo, a 2000 v40 (the one Volvo wants to forget it seems), was assembled in the Netherlands.

Fuck that.

I'm going to fire up my Canadian Trans Am and drive home. I might powershift the Mexican transmission if the mood hits me right.

Joking aside, corporations are spread all over now.

Lambo is German. Jaaaaaaag-you-are is Indian, just like Land Rover. People still refer to them as Italian and British. Aston Martin is part Italian and part American. People still refer to the Challenger as "American Muscle" even though it's a Fiat now.

I do get what you are saying, at the end of the day the money goes back to the home offices in China. It's a tough argument.

I think you're confusing where a car is engineered and built versus where the money comes from.

I live in the UK. If I get paid by a German to make a table, does that mean that the table is German? No. It's made in Britain so it's British.

Chrysler's owned by Fiat now. That doesn't make the American engineered and built cars they produce into Italian ones.

If all Volvo were doing was rebadging cars that were engineered in China I'd agree with you, but they're not.
